The historic phenomenon of pilgrimage is experiencing a resurgence around the world. A journey resulting from religious causes, it not only provides a spiritual experience, but also one of new environments, cultures and peoples, and is often undertaken as a guided tour. Yet pilgrimage as a mode of tourism has been little investigated. This book adds considerably to our knowledge by focusing on one specific pilgrimage voyage - that to the Holy Land during times of security crisis there. In doing so, it examines this tourism journey in relation to constraints and high levels of risk experienced by the pilgrims. It explores both the behavioural aspects of undertaking pilgrimage to such an insecure situation and the impacts of such crisis on the host tourism infrastructure and industry. It therefore not only provides insights into pilgrimage as tourism - and into this particular country's experience - but also offers an integrative approach to tourism crisis management.

This book explores the dynamic interaction between religion and tourism in the modern world. It considers questions such as: do travellers leave their religion at home when they are touring – and what happens if not? what are the relationships between tourism and pilgrimage? what happens to religious performances, places and festivals that function as tourism attractions? Other chapters examine religious theme parks, wellness and spa tourism, the roles played by tourist guides, guidebooks and religious souvenirs, and the role of tourism as a major arena of religious encounters in the contemporary world. Surveying the growing body of work in the field, Michael Stausberg argues that tourism should be a major focus of research within religious studies.

Tourism

Paperback. This monograph looks at the planning implications of a behavioural approach to the study of tourism. One of the main problems in planning tourism facilities is that of predicting tourists' expectations from these facilities and, hence, the potential of destinations to attract tourists. Until recently, studies aimed at detecting travel behaviour concentrated either on examining tourists' destination-choice behaviour or on the spatial patterns of tourist flows. This study deals, for the first time, with the decision-making and actual travel processes together in order to examine whether: destination-choice is class-differentiated;spatial behaviour is class-differentiated; andcausal relations exist between tourist's choice and actual travel behaviour?A modified value stretch model is employed to investigate, in a case study, the destination-choice and spatial behaviour of North-West London Jewry. Results show that tourists belong
