User Guidance in Business Process Modelling

Business process modelling is referred to as a complex, time consuming, and error prone task. The correction and improvement of badly designed process models becomes increasingly expensive in the later phases of the process management life cycle. This thesis develops the principles of guided process modelling and provides a contribution towards simplifying process modelling activities. The general research question this thesis answers is what are the difficulties in the usage of process modelling tools and which methods, techniques, and tools can guide users in modelling processes to target the existing problems. The question is addressed by following a research methodology of design sciences. Amongst others, it includes a detailed analysis of the research problem, a definition of the objective, the design and development of solutions, and an evaluation of the developed concepts. In summary, the thesis presents innovative concepts to support modellers and provides a step towards end-user enablement in process modelling.

Determinants of Micronutrient Status, DDT Residues and Pregnancy Outcomes

Micronutrient malnutrition and DDT exposure remain prevalent in the displaced population on the north-western border of Thailand. Overall aims of this thesis was to examine effects of antenatal supplementation, introduced micronutrient enriched flour and DDT exposure on biochemical status during pregnancy and post partum and on pregnancy outcomes in Maela refugee camp. Between 2004 and 2007, 2 cross-sectional studies where iron, thiamine, micronutrients and DDT residues were measured have enrolled more than 1,000 refugee camp women and prospectively followed their pregnancies. Sampling in the 3 month post partum period on more than 600 women for blood and breast milk has allowed comparison o...

On- and Offline Scheduling of Bidirectional Traffic

This book provides theoretical and practical insights related to bidirectional traffic on a stretch containing bottleneck segments. On a bottleneck segment concurrent traveling of vehicles in opposite direction is not possible. The book is motivated by and considers in particular the ship traffic at the Kiel Canal. It connects the North and Baltic Seas and is operated in both directions. In addition, considerations are included that account for the fact that ships register their requests only shortly before their arrival such that scheduling decisions must be adapted online.

Enzymatic Stabilization and Formation of Food Nano- and Microstructures

Understanding the nature of the body model underlying position sense

Accurate information about body structure and posture is fundamental for effective control of our actions. It is often assumed that healthy adults have accurate representations of their body. Although people's abilities to visually recognize their own body size and shape are relatively good, the implicit spatial representation of their body is extremely distorted when measured in proprioceptive localization tasks. The aim of this thesis is to understand the nature of spatial distortions of the body model measured in those localization tasks. We especially investigate the perceptual-cognitive components contributing to distortions of implicit representation of the human hand and compare those distortions with the one found on objects in similar tasks.

Egypt - The Lost Homeland: Exodus from Egypt, 1947-1967

In the twentieth century, the political Zionist movement and Egyptian rulers completely uprooted the country's thriving Jewish community - a goal the Pharaohs tried to realize as early as 3500 years ago. Mostly comprised of descendants of Sephardim from the Iberian Peninsula, the world's oldest Jewish community totaled 85,000 members in 1948. No more than 100 to 200 Jews live in Egypt today. This book tells the story of Egypt's Jewish history from Biblical times to 1967, the year of one of the last major Jewish emigration waves from Egypt. It highlights the First Exodus in ca. 1500 BCE and the Second Exodus, which was triggered by the foundation of the State of Israel and three successive wa...

Active Motion and Swarming

Recently, there has been an increasing focus on various biological and physical systems known as "active matter". Examples of such systems range from individual units, such as motile cells or artificial self-propelled particles, to large systems of interacting active particles or individuals. The emergence of large-scale collective motion, as exhibited by flocks of birds or bacterial colonies, is just one prominent and fascinating example of self-organization in active matter systems. In this work, we discuss different individual-based models of active matter using the concept of active Brownian motion. The first part of this work explores the dynamical behavior of single active particles wi...
