Random Surfaces and Quantum Gravity

The Cargese Workshop Random Surfaces and Quantum Gravity was held from May 27 to June 2, 1990. Little was known about string theory in the non-perturbative regime before Oetober 1989 when non-perturbative equations for the string partition functions were found by using methods based on the random triangulations of surfaees. This set of methods pro vides a deseription of non-eritical string theory or equivalently of the coupling of matter fields to quantum gravity in two dimensions. The Cargese meeting was very successful in that it provided the first opportunity to gather most of the active workers in the field for a fuH week of lectures and extensive informal discussions about these exeitin...

Quarks, Symmetries and Strings

Quarks, Symmetries and Strings is a book that reflects the rich diversity of current research in physics: it describes quantum chromodynamics, quark phenomenology, superstring theory, supersymmetry, matrix models, statistical methods, superconductivity and neural networks. The book also reflects the diversity of Dr Bunji Sakita's scientific work. Dr Sakita has made seminal contributions in many of these areas. The book celebrates the many path-breaking ideas he pioneered which still cross-fertilize many of the most active areas of current research. Contents:From the SU(6) Model to Uniqueness in the Standard Model (R E Marshak)Linear Momentum and Angular Momentum in Quaternionic Quantum Mecha...

Interface Between Physics And Mathematics - Proceedings Of The International Conference

This textbook systematically presents fundamental methods of statistical analysis: from probability and statistical distributions, through basic concepts of statistical inference, to a collection of methods of analysis useful for scientific research. It is rich in tables, diagrams, and examples, in addition to theoretical justification of the methods of analysis introduced. Each chapter has a section entitled “Exercises and Problems” to accompany the text. There are altogether about 300 exercises and problems, answers to the selected problems are given. A section entitled “Proof of the Results in This Chapter” in each chapter provides interested readers with material for further study.

Gauge Theories, Applied Supersymmetry and Quantum Gravity II

This volume contains the proceedings of a meeting held at Imperial College which is devoted to recent developments in string theory, supersymmetry and quantum gravity. The volume comprises two different sections. The first consists of five pedagogical reviews by prominent physicists, covering the currently important subjects of supermembranes, duality, D-branes, new non-perturbative methods and string phenomenology. The second section consists of research reports in these areas and also on other currently important topics such as supersymmetric gauge theories, two-dimensional quantum gravity and black holes. Contents:(Half) a Lecture on D-Branes (C Bachas)Supermembranes: An Introduction (M J...

Quantum Groups

The theory of Quantum Groups is a rapidly developing area with numerous applications in mathematics and theoretical physics, e.g. in link and knot invariants in topology, q-special functions, conformal field theory, quantum integrable models. The aim of the Euler Institute's workshops was to review and compile the progress achieved in the different subfields. Near 100 participants came from 14 countries. More than 20 contributions written up for this book contain new, unpublished material and half of them include a survey of recent results in the field (deformation theory, graded differential algebras, contraction technique, knot invariants, q-special functions). 2D-Gravity in Non-Critical Strings

A comprehensive survey of the use of the Liouville (and super-Liouville) equation in (super)string theory outside the critical dimension, and of the complementary approach based on the discretized space-time - known as the matrix model approach. The authors pay particular attention to supersymmetry, both in the continuum formulation and through the consideration of the super-eigenvalue problem. The methods presented here are important in a large number of complex problems, e.g. random surfaces, 2-D gravity and large-N quantum chromodynamics, and this comparitive study of the different methods permits a cross-evaluation of the results when both methods are valid, combined with new predictions when only one of the methods may be applied.
