Transit Oriented Development: Making it Happen brings together the different stakeholders and disciplines that are involved in the conception and implementation of TOD to provide a comprehensive overview of the realization of this concept in Australia, North America, Asia and Europe. The book identifies the challenges facing TOD and through a series of key international case studies demonstrates ways to overcome and avoid them. The insights gleaned from these encompass policy and regulation, urban design solutions, issues for local governance, the need to work with community and the commercial realities of TOD.

Learning, Innovation and Urban Evolution

In the global information society, innovation is a highly pervasive process that influences all facets of human life: cultural, economic, political, and institutional. A desire to comprehend the impacts of innovative change on so many areas of urban life prompted the research project that has resulted in the publication of this volume. Our research confirms that we are presently in the midst of an era of rapid and explosive change. The primary engine driving this latest transformation of the post-industrial society is generally thought to be technological. But such an explanation is too narrow. Broadly speaking, the age in which we find ourselves could be more aptly described as a global, kn...

Transportation and Network Analysis: Current Trends

MICHEL GENDREAU AND PATRICE MARCOTTE As an academic, Michael Florian has always stood at the forefront of transportation research. This is reflected in the miscellaneous contributions that make the chapters of this book, which are related in some way or another to Michael's interests in both the theoretical and practical aspects of his field. These interests span the areas of Traffic Assignment, Network Equilibrium, Shortest Paths, Railroad problems, De mand models, Variational Inequalities, Intelligent Transportation Systems, etc. The contributions are briefly outlined below. BASSANINI, LA BELLA AND NASTASI determine a track pricing policy for railroad companies through the solution of a ge...

Recent Developments in Transport Modelling

This book is intended for transportation professionals interested in the role of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), and freight transport modeling and policy. It is dedicated to the memory of Professor Marvin L. Manheim, the father of modern Transportation Systems Analysis (TSA), who founded the World Conference on Transport Research Society, and is considered the foremost visionary of ICTs, transportation, and logistics. The book is divided into three main parts. The first part is about Professor Marvin L. Manheim and his path breaking contributions to transportation. The main chapter, written by him, is based on the keynote presentation he delivered at the opening session ...

This paper presents an in-depth study of the methodology for estimating or updating origin to destination trip matrices from traffic counts. Following an analysis of the statistical foundation of the estimation and updating problems, various basic approaches are reviewed using a generic traffic assingment map. Computational issues related to specific assignment maps and estimation models for both road and transit networks are then discussed. Finally, additional insight into the relative performance of several estimators is provided by a set of test problems with varying input data.
